My husband & I have been seeing Dr. Shortell since ... well, let's just say it's been a long time! (We first started seeing him when he had an office in downtown Maplewood, before Maplewood was trendy/hipster.) His current office in Richmond Heights is clean, attractive, and functional, but certainly not glitzy, so you're not paying for frills. He does, however, keep up with the latest technology, so no worries there. And if he feels your dental problem would be better solved by a specialist, he'll tell you that.
He's always taken good care of us, at a reasonable cost. Contrary to what one poster said, his long-time office assistant, Glenda, does help him with some of the dental procedures, in addition to reception/bookkeeping and generally keeping the place running. And she does know a lot about dental insurance.
On at least one occasion Dr. Shortell has met me at his office after hours, to do an emergency temporary filling to replace one that fell out, so that we could leave on vacation as scheduled the next day. That, to me, says volumes about his caring for patients. Nobody loves to see a dentist, but it's a necessary thing, and Dr. Shortell makes it as comfortable and painless as he can.
